A fisher man paradise , this man made lake hidden away on the Meath-Westmeath border has to be one of the Midlands best kept secrets. Derrymore springs is situated alongside the legendary river deel, famous for its wild brown trout is a tributary of the river boyne. We are situated outside Killucan and 5 minutes from Kinnegad Co. Westmeath, just off the N4. This 20 acre spring fed lake with its sandy bottom, varying in depths from 5-20ft with some 30ft holes makes the ideal habitat for healthy trout.Giving careful dedication to the preservation and nurturing of nature we planted over 20,000 trees, a mixture of species ranging from birch, alder, common and red oaks, copper and green beeches, horse and Spanish
Chestnuts, wall nut, hornbeam, hazel nut, common and mountain ash, larch, Scots pine, holly, laurel, and a variety of berry trees that now serve as a food chain providing an abundance of fly life that benefit the feeding trout and small birds. The 50ft high forest of trees that surrounds the lake serves as a shelter from heavy winds leaving it calm for casting out. We also created 4 islands on the expanse of crystal clear water to provide nesting grounds for various wild birds. There are approximately 15 different specious of wild birds seen at different times of the year there’s Mute Swans, Hooper Swans, Mallards, lapwings, gulls, Herron’s, coots, grebes, divers, water hens, wringer plovers, and the occasional sighting of the king fisher and of course our uninvited guest the cormorant who’s infamous for feeding off our rainbow trout. There’s 4 green areas alongside the lake with picnic benches there is also a 1500 metres shore line to fish from.
The lake is very well stocked with rainbow trout weighing up to 8 lbs, the lake built with safety in mind is ideal for beginners and young kids starting out. We had the unique vision of turning the giant crater which dominated the area and blotted the landscape after the excavation of the rich sand and gravel, into a 20-acre man-made fishery. Myself and family work to bring our former family farm and sand and gravel pit back to life as a wild life nature preserve.
We hope to attract fishing enthusiasts from at home and abroad.
